Painting brick is the single biggest change you can make to a building for the money. A dark, dated exterior goes light and current, and an interior brick wall or fireplace stops dominating the room — for a fraction of what replacing or refacing the brick would cost.

Worth knowing before you decide

Painted brick is, for practical purposes, permanent. Getting paint back out of brick is difficult, expensive and rarely comes out well, so it is worth being sure rather than trying it and seeing. We would far rather talk that through with you at the estimate than have you regret it later.

Why brick is not just another surface

Brick and mortar are porous, and they hold moisture. That matters for two reasons. The surface has to be clean and completely dry before anything goes on it, and the coating has to let moisture escape again — paint that seals brick shut traps water behind it, and an Alberta freeze-thaw cycle turns that into blistering and spalling.

So the preparation is different from painting a wall. The brick is cleaned, any damaged mortar joints are dealt with, and it is primed with a masonry product before the finish coats. Mortar joints take paint differently from the brick itself, which is part of why a rushed brick job looks patchy within a year.

Interior brick

Fireplaces, chimney breasts and feature walls. Interior brick has no weather to contend with, so it is a more forgiving job than an exterior — but it is highly visible, and the cut-in around a mantel or hearth is what separates a good result from an obvious one.

Exterior brick

Whole houses, garages, and commercial frontages. Like all exterior work in Central Alberta this is a warm-season job: the brick needs to be dry, and the product needs temperatures above roughly 10°C to cure. Efflorescence — the white powdery deposit you sometimes see on brick — is a sign of moisture moving through the wall, and it needs sorting out before painting rather than covering up.
